Prologue

He heard his favorite song playing softly:

Udne laga kyon man bawla re

Aaya kahan se yeh hosla re

O re piya

O re piya haye...

The melody floated through the air, pulling him in like a whisper.

"Mr. Jonas, do you know where this music is coming from?"

"Oh, Mr. Khalid, it's probably one of our Indian dance students practicing for the college fest. They're likely in the dance studio," Mr. Jonas replied, pride evident in his voice.

Mezaan nodded politely but made an excuse to leave. "Excuse me, I need to take a call." Determined, he followed the sound of the music, weaving through hallways until he finally stood outside the dance studio. Peeking through the gap in the door, his breath caught.

Inside, a girl was dancingโ€”a classic Indian performance, full of grace and power. Her movements were fluid, almost hypnotic, but too quick for him to glimpse her face. Another girl approached her, and their conversation echoed faintly through the hall.

"Wow, that was amazing, Aru!"

The dancer paused, catching her breath. "Thanks, Tani. I can't wait to perform on stage. You know I can never stay away from dance or art!"

"Yes, yes, Miss Arushi Ahmed, I know! Now come on, I'm starving," her friend teased.

"Where are Amyra, Eisha, and Aroosh?" Arushi asked, and then with a laugh, she disappeared out the door.

Mezaan stood frozen, replaying the name in his head. Arushi Ahmed. Then, almost absentmindedly, he murmured, "Arushi... Mezaan?" A wistful smile flickered on his lips before he turned back toward the principal's office, resolving to let this fleeting moment remain just that.

Back in the office, he composed himself as the meeting wrapped up.

"Your students are truly talented, Mr. Jonas," Mezaan said smoothly. "Our company would be delighted to collaborate on internships and training opportunities."

The principal beamed. "Thank you, Mr. Khalid. It's an honor to work with your esteemed company. We'd also love for you to attend our college fest next weekend."

Mezaan smiled, the image of the graceful dancer still lingering in his mind. "Of course. Thank you for the invitation."
